Considering our low number of men the alliance seemed like a good fit for all. We were willing, oh High Command, we were ready to marry your men.

What we were not ready to do was to become Dak-Hiliah style brood mothers, or to have our ova harvested for use in your gestation clinics. We thought you wanted wives. It’s clear that you just wanted what our bodies could provide. That’s an alliance we would never sign.

Why did they not just conquer us? After all, we were weak from the ravages of our abysmal war with the Hax-Rah. Well, that would violate another more important alliance for them, that with the Confederation of Planets. They’d agreed not to conquer worlds that had no quarrel with them. A presumably simple concession to make.

By signing an alliance they never meant to keep they could claim we breached it, and thus generate the exception they needed to conquer our world.

Still, we shall not go down without a fight. We ready our armies for…

Janel stopped reading. Her mind had gone blank and numbness pervaded her core.

  No.

They were honorable. All her research confirmed this. The Haraden always kept their agreements. There was no precedent for anything like this in their history.

But then…had their need for women ever been this great?

Janel’s face crumpled. She wept into her hand, her entire body quaking.

Her people had suffered so much, and now, to have the peace they so deserved ruined in a matter of a day.

  It can’t be.

Her communicator chimed. It was Ansella.

“I don’t understand what’s going on,” Janel said through tears.

“It was a scam, a dirty scam!”

“But they’re honorable, Sella. Kordan is honorable! Can’t you prove it was just a malfunction?”

“He’s the worst of them all! He was their front man. It wasn’t a malfunction, Janel. The grid codes were changed and the neutralizers were blocked from the update. They’re right—it was sabotage. But we didn’t do it. They did.”

Fresh sobs contracted in her middle.

“Janel, I’ve got hardly a second to talk. It’s an absolute madhouse here. The Confederation is sending emissaries and inspectors, but they warn me there’s little hope. They act as though we really did sabotage our own grid. They say we knew the Haraden had a code of honor and that we’re the one’s who breached it. But it’s all ludicrous. No one will hear us. They don’t want to stand up to the Haraden.”

  “Dear God.”

“I’m going to ask if the emissaries can arrange transport for you out of there. You won’t be able to get into Malakeeza due to that damned grid, but you could go to Aquar or somewhere.”

  “Sella…”

“I have to go. I’m sorry. Try to be strong.” The communication ended.

Janel held herself while seated on the edge of her bed. She fell into a state of shock where she was too numb to cry. She could no longer look at the news reports. It was hard for her to even form thoughts—and yet, one came to her.

  Kordan knew.

Of course he knew. He’s the general with forces in the vicinity. He would be the one to lead the invasion of her world.

Yes he wanted her. He selfishly saw to his own needs before seeing to his greater agenda.

Did he really think she could love the conqueror of her people?

She forced herself to get up. Then she looked through her manufactured clothes for the least revealing outfit. Damn. Why had she made everything so tight and low cut? Thankfully she’d ordered a sweater in case she was cold. She put this over the dress she wore at the party—he could keep the rest of his damned clothes. After washing her face and drinking enough cold water to ease the ache in her throat, she emerged from the room.

She headed for Raggamor’s office. The gangly man was just coming down the stairs as she approached. She did her best to collect herself before speaking.

  “I need to see Kordan.”

He stopped in front of her. His eyes were bloodshot. “I’m sorry, that’s not possible. There’s been an emergency.”

“Yes. I know all about it.”

  He swallowed.

“I don’t wish to be here during this crisis. I want transport out of here. I mean…emissaries from the Confederation may be arranging something. It’s not certain. Either way, I shouldn’t be here now.”

  “You called emissaries?”

“No. Not me. One of Malakeeza’s Councilors called me.”

“So you’ve been talking to Malakeeza?”

  She eyed him. “Yes.”

“I can’t allow you to be sending them information. Were you listening against the door just now?”

  “I beg your pardon?”

“We’re in a state of war. I’m not going to bother the General for whatever you need right now. Do you have any idea what kind of stress he’s under?”

Her eyes narrowed. “He should have considered that before betraying my people.”

“My Lord would never betray anyone!” He was yelling. Spittle hit her cheek. “How dare you! Just who do you think you are?”

  “I want to leave. Now.”

Raggamor grabbed her by her shoulders and spun her back toward the direction of her suite. Janel jerked to get free of him. His grip was tight enough to bruise her.

  “Get your hands off me!”

“We don’t release enemies during war! You were on the wrong side when this broke out, and you’ve been confiscated by the Haraden Empire.”

He was forcing her to march back toward her room. Janel finally broke free of him.

  “Are you insane!”

“Don’t be stupid.” His lower lip trembled in anger. “Your people decided to test us, and we will not be tested. Malakeeza is going to become a slave world. The women are going to be taken by the Haraden Empire. You’re already here, at the pleasure of my lord. You’re not going anywhere.”

Her voice cracked with emotion she could no longer hold back. “Let me hear that from him!”

  “No.” He continued pushing her.

She was thrust into her room. Raggamor came in to skulk around her bed. She watched him with her eyes wide with outrage. He found her tablet and tucked it under his arm.

When he left he closed the door and she heard him lock it.

Janel curled in bed to weep once again.

Barely a half hour passed before there was a knock at her door. Janel didn’t bid whomever it was to enter. She merely stared at the white door while snuffling.

Kordan entered looking just as haggard as his servant. He gazed at her with pained eyes that shot fresh anguish through her.

We could have been so happy.

She lowered her face to cry once more.

He walked to her gingerly and sat next to her on the bed. His arm went around back. She pulled away.

“Don’t comfort me. You’re the source of my derision.”

  “I am?”

She scowled at him. He turned away from her gaze and sighed.

“You can’t think I wished this to happen. Why would your people do this? It makes no sense to us.”

She shook her head. “It was your people who did this. You wanted to claim our women without any restrictions. You agreed to a farce of an alliance just so you could pretend that we breached it and conquer us.”

Kordan made a low sound through his nostrils. “That’s not true. We are honorable. We’d never do such a thing.”

Really? She wanted so desperately to believe him.

“But we would never sabotage our own grid.”

“You did, Janel. It will be proven by the Confederation inspectors. We’ve already determined what happened through remote system analysis. The codes were kept at a mainframe on
your world. Someone disconnected it from the network, changed the codes, then reconnected it. We have no way of knowing what the new codes are. We provided your leaders with a list and allowed them to be the sole custodians of it. When the grid sensors attempted to validate the codes in the neutralizers they didn’t match the mainframe. This could not have been done by the Haraden remotely. We have our own codes, and they are all still valid.”

Janel grabbed a tissue to scrub her nose. “I’m not very savvy about complicated technology.”

“The Confederation inspectors will confirm what I’ve told you.”

“Even so—why would we sabotage our own grid? Do you know how much we suffered? Everyone wanted the conflict with the Hax-Rah to end. It was absolute hell. Your grid meant everything to us.”

“I know this. That’s why I’ve come to you. I’m trying to untangle this mess, Janel. I don’t wish to lead an invasion on Malakeeza. The thought of ravaging your home world makes me sick.” There was a quaver in his voice. “It must not happen.”

She reached over and squeezed his hand. “Please. Don’t let it happen.”

“If you hand the traitor over to my masters and allow us to deal with him, then we will forgive Malakeeza. Right now that’s impossible. You stand in unity with the one who defied us.”

“I don’t know who had access, and even if I did, I can’t fathom why anyone would want to do this.”

“There is a reason. They believed it would look as though we had sabotaged the grid to be able to enslave your world. Such an action would, in theory, get us kicked out of the Confederation. Since a Confederation member committed this crime against you, they would take responsibility for your defense. You would become an adjunct member world. Your difficulties with the Hax-Rah, as well as the Haraden, would be over.”

Janel blinked at him. Harrowing connections were being made in her mind.

“One of your leaders did this, Janel.”

  “Councilor Karrin Orix.”

Kordan’s lips parted. “The elder man?”

She nodded. “He hates the Haraden. He despised the idea of this alliance. If he had one second of access to that mainframe he would have done this.”

“Can you find out for certain?”

  “I need to call Ansella.”

He produced a communicator from a pouch attached to his belt. After scrolling briefly, he made the connection and handed it to her. She used the speaker function so Kordan could hear.

“Sella, the mainframe—could Karrin have gotten on it somehow?”

“The mainframe? Is that what they think was sabotaged? Janel, I’m the only one who had access to that. It’s in my chamberroom at the council building. It’s in a safe.”

“Think, Sella, please. Could Karrin have gotten access somehow?”

“Oh dear God I hope not. He might actually sabotage that damn grid. The fool.”

Kordan grunted too softly to be heard.

  “Is there surveillance?” Janel said.

“Visual surveillance. Not audio. I don’t want my conversations recorded. Oh—he was with me once when I typed in the keycode for the safe. He could have—my word.”

Kordan reached for the communicator. She handed it to him.

“Ansella Devar-Ne, this is General Kordan.”

A long pause followed. Janel felt badly for letting her be overheard without her knowledge.

  “Hello, General,” Ansella finally said.

“Turn the traitor over to us, and we will pardon Malakeeza for this offense.”

Another long pause followed. “What will you do to him?”

Kordan fumed through his nostrils. “He’ll be executed.”

  Janel winced. Ansella groaned softly.

“I see. I’ll take the necessary action.” She ended the communication.

Janel let her body droop against Kordan’s side. This time when his arm came around her she did not recoil.

“Tell me that you believe me. That you know I would never have betrayed your people.”

She brought her arms around him. Tears were still at the back of her eyes. “I believe you.” She leaned back, snuffling once more while gazing into his eyes. “And I feel terrible for doubting you.”

He reached up to thread his fingers her hair. Janel closed her eyes in bliss at the tingly sensation.

“I’ll forgive you for this, if you forgive me for how cruel I was during our negotiations.”

She managed a smile. “I already forgave you for that.”

  He returned her smile.

His hand moved over her throat, making a turn at her shoulder. Goose bumps lit up on her arm. She knew her face had to be flushed.

“I know you’re busy,” she said softly.

“I’ve time before the next communication with my masters.”

Janel drew her lips into her mouth. “Then stay with me.”

She heard Kordan exhale through his nostrils. His eyes spilled down her body, lingering on the shape of her breasts from beneath her sweater. He moved his face near enough for barely an inch to separate them.

His fingers went from her shoulder back to the well of her neck, caressing and lighting up potent tingles.

“If I stay you know what will happen.”

She looked back into his eyes. Oh yes.

Kordan moved sideways over her, lowering her back onto the bed. He seized her lips below his own.

She gripped him with both arms around his large back. His body was a heated mass of firm muscle on top of her. She wriggled without breaking the kiss to pull off her sweater. When he realized her intent he broke from her mouth and helped her shed it. Then he once again recaptured her lips below his own.

His hand slid down to her sensitive inner thigh, parting it gently. Her dress rode up allowing his groin to press between her legs with only his clothes and her thin silk panties to separate them. He grinded against her, mashing a thick articulated erection against her sex. She got a tremble in her middle as they kissed. The heat and pressure between her thighs made her clit twinge. She arched her hips to feel more of him.

Kordan engulfed her mouth with a hunger as he moved, their tongues lathed sensually together. He was undulating his hips with hard pressure. His sheathed cock managed to separate the hood of her sex. Janel clenched deep inside. He was crushing her petals beneath moistened panties. If he kept it up for long she would have orgasmed.

Kordan’s movements encompassed his whole muscular form on top of her, including where he pressed against the bodice of her dress. Her nipples hardened to aching points. The fabric shifted, and then one breast came loose. Neither paused to right this. She had her bare nipple squashed against the hot hard muscles of his chest.

Janel dug her nails into his back. Her body was coursing with exquisite heat. She could feel the electric chemistry between them, as potent as ever, and it made her yearn for more. Perhaps it was still too soon to get into bed together. Propriety no longer mattered to her. Their bodies sizzled together just as she knew they would. She’d never fathomed so visceral a connection with someone.

Kordan lifted himself off her. His chest was heaving and his face had darkened. Auburn eyes glittered like a cat’s as they dove down to absorb her naked breast. Janel got an erotic shiver from the exposure. He grunted in sensuous approval.

He leaned further back, hooked his fingers into the neckline of her dress, and tore it off her.

The clench inside her included her perked clit this time. Her skin felt as though it thrummed with the sudden exposure.

Kordan threw off his mantle then reached down to work his way out of his pants. He wore nothing beneath them. She peeked down at the thick cock that sprang free from his waistline. The ripe organ curled toward his navel with a purplish hue contrasting against his pale blue skin.

Kordan looked down over her, taking in her ample breasts and the creamy expanse of her flesh. The heat of his own flesh, the power he exuded, made her gasp softly. This gigantic hulk of a man could have had h
er anyway he wanted. A gentle hand cupped the side of her face, as if to reassure her.

  “You’re so beautiful.”

Janel turned her face so she could kiss his fingers. “And you’ve got the body of a god.”

  “Be my goddess.”

He lowered his head into the crook of her neck to latch a heated mouth to the sensitive spot that had made her shudder before. Then his lips made a trail of whispery kisses to her breasts. He gathered both supple mounds in his large hands, drawing light brown nipples up toward him. His mouth engulfed one, sucking the tender bud hard, tugging, and then letting it pop free from his lips. He repeated the move to her other side, leaving her with wet pulsating nubs. Kordan took each between his thumbs and forefingers and gently rolled.

“Ohh.” Her head craned back. Shockwaves of intense pleasure went from her chest to her clenching sex. She arched her back and tried to angle free from the overwhelming stimulation.

Kordan removed his fingers and continued the work of his mouth. He suckled each tremulous nipple, barraging it with a merciless tongue before switching his attention to the other. Janel clung to his shoulders and began to squirm. My word. Was he trying to make her come through nipple play? Her sex was throbbing in tandem with her pulse now. The slickness between her thighs had already dampened her panties.

His hand slithered down her side and caressed over her full hip. It detoured along the waistband of her underwear, slipping under it, and then between her legs. Janel’s chest jolted with a sharp gasp. He connected the pad of his fingers to her clit.

She clung to him tighter. The sensitivity of her nipples was nothing compared that knot of moistened tissue. He nudged it with both finger tips.

Janel thrashed her head against a pillow. “Ngh!” Her heart raced now, and every rapid beat was echoed by a thrumming in her perked clit.

He pressed and then slid his fingers lower, leaving her tender nodule pulsating. The digits glided over wet petals, separating them, and then pushing between them. Her opening was so tight even the two fingers expanded her to enter. He aching hole now had its tension breached. His fingers curled, mashing into the prickling source of her need. He swirled the digits, making her clench against them. She was very near the edge. His fingers coaxed her still more, making her insides buzz with delirious heat. Janel couldn’t help but squirm with her hips. She arched upwards to lead his fingers back to the palpitating spot within her. Aching need had made her desperate.
